The Drug Talk: Conversation Guide

The average age for a child to first interact with substances is 11 years old. It is never too early to have the important conversations.

Drug Deaths

An overdose is when someone takes too much of a substance. A poisoning is when someone is unaware that the substance was present (ex. Taylor died from Fentanyl poisoning because he didn’t know the heroin was laced with Fentanyl)

Fentanyl is the #1 killer of Americans ages 13-50.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50x more powerful than heroin and 100x more powerful than morphine.

Only 2mg (size of 3 grains of salt) is a lethal dose.

Xylazine or “Tranq” is an animal tranquilizer that has increasingly been laced into other drugs. It has been called the “skin-rotting zombie drug” because of its extreme effects on humans. 26% of the Fentanyl seized by the DEA this year also contained Xylazine. Narcan can not reverse an overdose of Xylazine because it is not an opioid.

The DEA estimates that ~48% of “street” drugs are laced with Fentanyl.

Narcan is an opioid overdose reversal drug. It can temporarily stop or slow an overdose until medical professionals arrive. It is available over-the-counter at most pharmacies and covered by most insurances.

Mental Health Maintenance

1 in 5 Americans experience a mental health condition every year. People with mental health conditions can still live very fulfilling lives-especially if they have access to treatment.

Not sure where to start? Primary care physicians can often diagnose mental health conditions and refer you to an appropriate treatment provider. School guidance offices or social workers can also help connect youth with resources.

A Therapist is someone who verbally treats mental health symptoms or conditions.
